North Bergen Resident and Former Corrections Officer Indicted for Fatal Motor Vehicle Accident
By: Moe M.
On April 2, 2017, North Bergen Police officers were notified of two individuals struck by a motor vehicle at the intersection of Plank Road and Kennedy Boulevard, North Bergen, New Jersey. Police officers discovered the identity of the two victims as Maffei, fifty-seven (57), and Tauro, eighty (80), both residents of Jersey City, New Jersey. Both victims were immediately taken to Jersey City Medical Center, but unfortunately were pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

The driver was presumed to have fled the scene of the crime as there was no vehicle present. However, according to the Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Keith Travers, there was a video of the accident. As a result, law enforcement agents were able to find the driver and identified him as Hansen, a North Bergen resident. He was reported to have a .27 Blood Alcohol level.

On October 25, 2017, Michael J. Hansen was indicted by the Hudson County Grand Jury and charged with four (4) counts, two counts of First-Degree Death by Auto and two counts of Second-Degree Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident Resulting in Death.

All persons are assumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law
