Devin Brown, 24, has been indicted with First-Degree Assault, First-Degree Attempted Robbery, and Second-Degree Attempted Murder by New York State Supreme Court.

The incident occurred on May 20, 2017 on the Lower East side around Forsyth Street. The 61-year-old victims was allegedly walking down, and she was assaulted by Brown, seemingly unprovoked. He punched her, knocking her to the ground where he kicked her body and head passed the point of unconsciousness. Once immobilized he went through her pockets then went back to hitting her.

A passerby stopped him and called the police who soon arrived to the scene. The woman was rushed to the hospital and Brown, who had begun walking away and had entered a deli, was immediately arrested.

The victim is still in the hospital being treated for bleeding in the brain, she faces permanent damage.

District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. released a statement condemning the actions, “The details of this senseless attack are truly shocking- the defendant is accused of continuing to assault the victim as she lay motionless on the ground. No one should have to fear walking our city’s streets and my office will continue to vigorously prosecute anyone who threatens the safety of our citizens.”

All persons are assumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.
