On January 7th, 2026, the arrest of Kerri Aherne, age 43, was announced by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr.. Kerri Aherne was charged with first-degree Attempted Assault, second-degree Attempted Murder, second-degree Assault, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child as a misdemeanor. The arrest and charges against Kerri Aherne were a result of an investigation handled by NYPD Officer Jonathan Castro of the Midtown South Precinct and Detective Lauren Helmeset of the Midtown South Precinct Detective Squad

According to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, on December 11th, 2025, Kerri Aherne purchased a knife at a Macy’s store located in Herald’s Square near West 34th Street and 7th Avenue. At approximately 3:31 p.m. Kerri Aherne allegedly entered a bathroom on the seventh floor before approaching the victim from behind. The victim was changing the diaper of her 10-month-old baby when the defendant, unprovoked, allegedly began stabbing the victim with a knife. The victim was able to grab the knife from Kerri Ahern and throw it to the other end of the room, however during the altercation the victim’s baby fell onto the floor from the changing station. Kerri Aherne was restrained by the victim’s boyfriend and store security until she was subsequently arrested upon police arrival. The victim was transported to a local hospital and required intensive care for two stab wounds in her back, and lacerations to her arm and hand that needed stitching.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office stated that the charges against Kerri Aherne are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
