On February 13th, 2026, the arrest of Jabez Chakraborty, age 22, was announced by Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz. Jabez Chakraborty was charged with first-degree Attempted Assault and fourth-degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon. The arrest and charges against Jabez Chakraborty were a result of an investigation handled by the NYPD and Queens District Attorney’s Office.
According to the Queens District Attorney’s Office, at approximately 10:25 a.m. on January 26th, 2026, a 911 call was made by one of Jabez Chakraborty’s family members claiming they needed help due to the defendant throwing glass objects inside their residence. Two on duty NYPD officers were dispatched to the scene and on arrival one of the family members let them inside the house. After entering the residence the officers reported that Jabez Chakraborty grabbed a knife from the kitchen and began walking towards them. Allegedly the defendant paced himself towards the officers while changing his grip and winding his arm back in what looked like to be getting ready to attack the officers with the knife. As Jabez Chakraborty allegedly approached the officers, they instructed him several times to drop the knife while backing up and closing a door separating the foyer from the living room. The defendant opened the door and continued his advance as officers continued to tell him to put the knife down before one officer fired four shots at him. Jabez Chakraborty was transported to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center to be treated for his wounds from the incident.
The Queens District Attorney’s Office stated that the charges against Jabez Chakraborty are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
