On October 13th, 2026, the arrest of Carlos Andres Delgado Lopez, age 31, was announced by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr.. Carlos Andres Delgado Lopez was charged with first-degree Assault as a class B felony, second-degree Murder as a class A-I felony, and second-degree Attempted Murder as a class B felony. The arrest and charges against Carlos Andres Delgado Lopez were a result of an investigation handled by the NYPD, particularly Detective Albert Vitarelli of the Manhattan South Homicide Squad and Detective Thomas Donovan of the Midtown North Precinct Detective Squad.
According to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, for a period of time Carlos Andres Delgado Lopez was allowing a female friend to temporarily stay over at his apartment located in the area of West 47th Street and Tenth Avenue. On September 9th, 2026, Carlos Andres Delgado Lopez allegedly assaulted the woman staying with him by pushing her to the ground and striking her several times with an unknown sharp object. The victim managed to break free from the defendant and barricade herself inside her bedroom before contacting Jan Carl Mesa, another friend of the defendant that lived nearby. At approximately 2:35 p.m. Jan Carl Mesa entered the defendant’s apartment and attempted to calm him down. However, Carlos Andres Delgado Lopez then allegedly stabbed Jan Carl Mesa multiple times before fleeing from the scene. The woman then exited the bedroom to find Jan Carl Mesa bleeding out on the floor and called emergency services. Both victims were transported to a local hospital where Jan Carl Mesa passed away approximately two hours after arriving due to the severity of the stab wounds he sustained. Carlos Andres Delgado Lopez was located and arrested near Columbus Circle shortly after the alleged assaults. A court-authorized search warrant led to the retrieval of a knife from inside the defendant’s apartment.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office stated that the charges against Carlos Andres Delgado Lopez are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
