In the evening of September 3, 2022, Mount Laurel Police Department responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision. The restaurant owner of Cucina Carini, Glenn Keen, was leaving the parking lot of his restaurant when a vehicle passing by collided with him, causing a fire. Keen was pulled from his burning vehicle and had to be airlifted to Temple University Hospital. The victim was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The other driver, Desmond Newberry, was pulled from his vehicle and transported to Cooper University Hospital to treat his minor injuries. It was revealed later from investigation that Newberry had been traveling at a speed of 126 miles per hour when he collided with Keen’s vehicle. The defendant was recorded to have had a blood alcohol concentration of .256 that night. Newberry had previous drunk driving charges from two prior occasions already on his record.

On June 19, 2023, Newberry appeared before the Honorable Terrence R. Cook, P.J.Cr., and was sentenced to 12 years in NJ State Prison for First-Degree Aggravated Manslaughter. Upon his release, the defendant’s driver’s license will be suspended for 10 years.
