On June 2nd, 2025, the arrest of Muslim Brunson, age 46, was announced by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr.. Muslim Brunson was charged with first-degree Assault, first-degree Attempted Assault, second-degree Attempted Murder, and third-degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon. The arrest and charges against Muslim Brunson were a result of an investigation handled by NYPD Detectives Albert Vitarelli and Anthony Ahwal of the 1st Precinct Detective Squad
According to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, at approximately 3:02 p.m. on April 7th, 2025, Muslim Brunson allegedly threw a glass bottle at a 28-year-old victim’s back on Broome Street. The bottle ended up hitting the victim’s right shoulder blade before shattering on the ground, Muslim Brunson then picking up one of the glass shards and chasing her with it while screaming. A couple of minutes later Muslim Brunson approached a second victim, a 25-year-old woman, and threw the glass shard at her. The glass ended up getting stuck in the victim’s neck, cutting deep enough to expose muscle, tissue, and veins. She was transported to Bellevue Hospital to be treated for her injuries which required emergency surgery, a tracheostomy, and being placed on a ventilator. She needed to remain in the ICU for more than a week to recover properly.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office stated that the charges against Muslim Brunson are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
