Tavaughn Thompson of the Bronx, New York, Charged with Hate Crime for 2023 Homophobic Attack Against Bystander

On May 21st, 2026, the arrest of Tavaughn Thompson, age 26, was announced by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr.. Tavaughn Thompson was charged with second-degree Aggravated Harassment and third-degree Assault as an E felony. The arrest and charges against Tavaughn Thompson were a result of an investigation handled by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office

According to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, on December 29th, 2023, both Tavaughn Thompson and the victim were aboard a car on the northbound A train leaving from the West 14th Street and 8th Avenue station. At approximately 8:35 p.m. both individuals exited the train car at the 125th Street and 8th Avenue stop when Tavaughn Thompson allegedly punched the victim repeatedly multiple times. The assault inflicted bruising, scarring, and severe pain to the left side of the victim’s face. Both prior to and during the altercation Tavaughn Thompson also allegedly called the victim an anti-gay slur before a good samaritan intervened the attack. The victim was transported to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries, however the defendant was not arrested until February 2026 where he was arraigned in Criminal Court

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office stated that the charges against Tavaughn Thompson are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
