On June 24th, 2025, the arrest of Jahmelia Mattison John, age 42, was announced by Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. Jahmelia Mattison John was charged on a 23-count indictment with third-degree Grand Larceny, first-degree Scheme to Defraud, five counts of first-degree Falsifying Business Records, five counts of first-degree Offering a False Instrument for Filing, five counts of Penalties for Fraudulent Practices, and five counts of third-degree Insurance Fraud. The arrest and charges against Jahmelia Mattison John were a result of an investigation handled by the New York State Inspector General Staff including Senior Investigator Anne Peters, Investigator Mario Rubino, and Digital Forensic Investigator Colin Corrado, working under the supervision of Attorney-in-Charge for Workers’ Compensation Fraud Bryan Richmond and Chief of Investigations for the New York City and Long Island Regions Ben Defibaugh.
According to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, between the dates of June 10th, 2021, and June 6th, 2025, the defendant was employed as a NYS Correction Officer at the Queensboro Correctional Facility’s Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS). During the aforementioned time period of approximately 4 years, Jahmelia Mattison John had stolen approximately $43,382.79 in benefits from the DOCCS and New York State Insurance Fraud (NYSIF) by falsely claiming she was dealt an injury from work. This claim was contradicted when allegedly the NYS IG’s office had recorded Jahmelia Mattison John advertising and working at her hair braiding business with no apparent injuries as she claimed to have had.
The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office stated that the charges against Jahmelia Mattison John are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
