On April 28th, 2026, the arrest of Jerome Morris, age 50, was announced by Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay. Jerome Morris was charged with first-degree Murder and third-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose. The arrest and charges against Jerome Morris were a result of an investigation handled by the Gloucester Township Police Department and the Camden County Fire Marshall’s Office.
According to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office, at approximately 2:25 a.m. on April 28th, 2026, reports of a stabbing were made at a residence on the 100 block of Freedom Way. Officers from the Gloucester Township Police Department responded to the property in question to discover Jerome Morris holding a knife and covered in blood before being taken into custody. Officers also located and identified a stabbing victim, the defendant’s 51-year-old spouse Monica Morris, in a bedroom on the third floor alongside a fire and heavy smoke. The Erial Fire Department, Gloucester Township Fire District 88, Pine Hill Fire Department, and Winslow Fire Department responded and moved the victim before putting out the fire. Monica Morris was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:50 a.m. as two other individuals inside the building were able to escape the fire without being injured. Three responding officers were minorly injured, two of them being treated by Inspira EMS and Virtua paramedics on the scene while the other was taken to a local hospital before being released.
The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office stated that the charges against Jerome Morris are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
