On June 1st, 2026, the arrest of Jayden Sanchez, age 17, was announced by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr.. Jayden Sanchez was charged with three counts of first-degree Assault as a class B felony, second-degree Murder as a class A-I felony, and second-degree Robbery as a class C felony. The arrest and charges against Jayden Sanchez were a result of an investigation handled by NYPD Detective Danielle Venuto of the Manhattan South Homicide Squad,  Officer Carlos Arias, Detective John Tuohy, Detective Sean Gilbert of the Midtown South Precinct Detective Squad, and Detective Thomas Donovan and Detective Michael DiPalma of the Midtown North Precinct Detective Squad

According to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, on April 7th, 2026, Jayden Sanchez entered a souvenir shop on West 40th street while accompanied by three other unnamed individuals. The group began to cause a disturbance by picking up and throwing various merchandise around the store. Upon returning a second time they were refused entry by two workers, followed by Jayden Sanchez allegedly pulling out a knife and stabbing one of the workers in the hand. On May 3rd, 2026, the group went to a newsstand in Midtown, New York, with the intent of stealing merchandise and money. At approximately 3:00 a.m. Jayden Sanchez allegedly threatened a worker at the newsstand by claiming he had a knife that he would use to cut him with. The worker surrendered as the defendant then grabbed a cashbox containing several hundred dollars. At approximately 6:00 p.m. the group returned to the newsstand and broke the window by throwing a glass bottle at it. In order to fix the window the owner and multiple employees went to the newsstand at approximately 10:00 p.m., however Jayden Sanchez returned shortly after. The employees present attempted to restrain the defendant until police arrived but Jayden Sanchez managed to break free and stab a worker in the chest causing puncture wounds in his lung and hemopneumothorax.

On May 4th, 2026, Jayden Sanchez alongside two other individuals approached Leonides Baez who was sleeping on a breezeway ledge between West 42nd Street and West 43rd Street. The juvenile group began to harass Leonides Baez in various means including; waking him up, taking his bag and throwing it at his head, urinating in a cup and throwing it at the victim, and grabbing his arm to hold him in place before using an 8-inch blade to stab him directly in the heart. The group fled from the scene while Leonides Baez attempted to get help from a passerby while losing consciousness, however he unfortunately passed away shortly after as EMS and police arrived.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office stated that the charges against Jayden Sanchez are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
