On August 10th, 2026, the arrest of David Aguero, age 24, was announced by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr.. David Aguero was charged with two counts of first-degree Identity Theft as a class D felony, first-degree Scheme to Defraud as a class E felony, second-degree Grand Larceny as a class C felony, third-degree Bribe Receiving as a class D felony, third-degree Grand Larceny as a class D felony, and fourth-degree Grand Larceny as a class E felony. The arrest and charges against David Aguero were a result of an investigation handled by Daniel Malvey and Angie Garcia of the New York City Department of Investigation, and both Detective Ramon Gutierrez and Officer William Clune of the NYPD’s 24th Precinct Detective Squad.
According to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, from March 16th, 2026, to June 11th, 2026, David Aguero had stolen over $4,000 from New York City shelter residents. The defendant had previously worked as a housing specialist at a homeless shelter in Manhattan, New York. David Aguero is alleged to have abused his position by telling residents they needed to pay him directly in order to secure an apartment despite them being in possession of city-issued housing vouchers. The defendant secured thousands in cash and electronic transfers, in addition to using identifying information from one victim in order to open and heavily spend on two credit cards in their name.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office stated that the charges against David Aguero are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
