Story by Shane.

On February 15, 2004, Marvin Argueta fatally shot Miguel Gamez and injured three other people at a bar on Mulberry Street in Newark, NJ. The police linked the killing to MS-13 — an international street gang also known as Mara Salvatrucha. Prior to the shooting, Argueta reportedly got into an altercation with Gamez’s brother and left the bar. When Argueta finally returned, he was armed and came back with two co-conspirators.

Argueta shot Gamez, Gamez’s brother, and their spouses. Marvin Argueta fled to El Salvador immediately after the homicide. In November of 2004, an Essex County grand jury indicted Argueta and his two co-conspirators. They were charged with murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, conspiracy, and weapons offenses. After Argueta failed to appear, a warrant was issued out for his arrest. Argueta was found in El Salvador in 2017. In the following year, the Supreme Court of El Salvador granted the extradition of Argueta and he was returned to New Jersey. Argueta’s sentencing is scheduled for May 15, 2020. Argueta faces up to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison.
