On August 29th, 2025, the arrest of Robert J. Meserve, III, age 37, was announced by Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella. Robert J. Meserve, III was charged with second-degree distribution of child pornography, third-degree sexual extortion, fourth-degree terroristic threats, and fourth-degree stalking. The arrest and charges against Robert J. Meserve, III was a result of an investigation launched by Chief Matthew Finck of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.
According to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, during June 2025 the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Cyber Crimes Unit received information regarding an alleged case of sexual extortion. The anonymous victim reported that over several weeks she and her family had received texts from unknown numbers, the texts depicting harmful threats and sending photos and videos of the victim nude and engaging in sexual activity. Robert J. Meserve, III was depicted as the alleged sender of the messages due to his previous connections to the victim. An investigation launched revealed that Robert J. Meserve, III had allegedly threatened to release sexually explicit media of the victim in an attempt to coerce a sexual relationship with her. Despite using eight different phone numbers, authorities were able to trace the online activity back to Robert J. Meserve, III and also reveal that he had used his internet access in order to download and share files depicting prepubescent minors nude and engaging in sexual acts. Robert J. Meserve, III was located by the Massachusetts State Police, United States Marshall Service, and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, before then executing a search warrant at his residence.
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office stated that the charges against Robert J. Meserve, III are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
