On April 9th, 2025, the arrest of Tyree Epps, age 32, was announced by Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. Tyree Epps was charged with second-degree Manslaughter, Criminally Negligent Homicide, second-degree Assault, Leaving the Scene of an Incident Without Reporting, Disobeying Stop Signs, Driving in Excess of Maximum Speed Limits, and being an Unlicensed Driver. The arrest and charges against Tyree Epps were a result of an investigation handled by detectives from the New York Police Department.
According to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, at approximately 1:15 p.m. on February 27th, 2025, Tyree Epps was driving a 2008 Mercedes-Benz C300 southbound on Van Sinderen Avenue towards Blake Avenue along with 26-year old Imani Vance in the passenger seat. Allegedly Tyree Epps ran through a stop sign while speeding on the corner of Van Sinderen Avenue and Blake Avenue, where he collided with a school bus. At the time of the collision Imani Vance was thrown into the windshield of the 2008 Mercedes-Benz and struck her head. Following the initial crash, Tyree Epps allegedly rammed into a third stationary vehicle, causing minor injury to the 57-year old bus driver. Imani Vance was taken to Brookdale Hospital but was unfortunately pronounced dead due to blunt impact injuries to her torso and a laceration to her heart. Immediately after the crash Tyree Epps made his way inside an uber and ordered it to drive, however responding NYPD officers were able to obtain a description of the uber and stop it. Tyree Epps attempted to flee on foot after the uber was stopped, however he was pursued and apprehended by officers.
The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office stated that the charges against Tyree Epps are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
