On April 23rd, 2026, the arrest of Chantel Barnes, age 28, was announced by Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly. Chantel Barnes was charged with first-degree Assault as a B violent felony, second-degree Attempted Murder as a B violent felony, second-degree Assault as a D violent felony, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. The arrest and charges against Chantel Barnes were a result of an investigation handled by the Nassau County Police Department’s Special Victims Squad.
According to the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office, at approximately 4:00 p.m. on March 9th, 2026, Chantel Barnes entered the hallway of her apartment building carrying her 21-month-old daughter while screaming with blood on her clothes. She then allegedly began flinging her child around in circles before throwing her against a concrete wall. Soon after the child’s father returned home from work to find the child severely injured on the hallway floor. With the help of another family member the police were called and the child was transported to Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center to be treated for a fractured skull, fractured clavicle, and unspecified internal injuries. The victim was released into the care of her father on March 20th, 2026, while Chantel Barnes was allegedly spotted walking on public streets following the incident. The defendant was located and apprehended by detectives from the Nassau County Police Department’s Special Victims Squad on April 23rd, 2026.
The Nassau County District Attorney’s Office stated that the charges against Chantel Barnes are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
