On April 13th, 2024, the arrest of Kareem Pygum, 43, was announced by Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri. Kareem Pygum was charged with one count of first-degree Murder, one count of first-degree Attempted Murder, two counts of second-degree Aggravated Assault, and three Weapons Offenses, including certain persons not to possess a weapon.
According to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, at approximately 8:00 p.m., on April 4th, 2024, a shooting was reported around the area of the 500 block of N. Clinton Avenue. When officers arrived at the scene they came across two adult victims suffering from gunshot wounds. The male victim, Jose Alfredo Azcona Garcia, 46, suffered a gunshot to his head. The female victim, who was unidentified, suffered a gunshot to her shoulder. The victims were swiftly transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center for treatment. On April 9th, 2024, Jose Alfredo Azcona Garcia passed away because of the gunshot wound. Also prior to Kareem Pygum’s arrest, a third victim from the shooting was found with a graze wound to his left cheek. Kareem Pygum was arrested by members of the Mercer County Homicide Task Force and the Trenton Police Department on April 10th, 2024.
The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office stated that the charges against Kareem Pygum are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
