On March 26th, 2026, the arrest of Daniel Petoia, age 34, was announced by New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport. Daniel Petoia was charged with two counts of second-degree Official Misconduct, third-degree Aggravated Assault, three counts of third-degree Tampering with Public Records or Information, third-degree Making False Reports to Law Enforcement Authorities, fourth-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, three counts of fourth-degree Falsifying or Tampering with Records, and fourth-degree Tampering with Physical Evidence. The arrest and charges against Daniel Petoia were a result of an investigation handled by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.
According to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, on December 20th, 2024, Daniel Petoia was in possession of a sharpened metallic object and claimed it belonged to an inmate. The defendant used this as an excuse to then allegedly beat and strike the victim without reason. According to the indictment Daniel Petoia struck the inmate several times on his head and on his body continuously after the victim fell to the ground, causing significant bodily injury. After the altercation Daniel Petoia filed reports claiming the inmate was in possession of a weapon to cover up his alleged assault on the victim, however this was disproved through other evidence discovered at the scene. Due to the evidence presented Daniel Petoia’s recollection of how the events transpired were deemed to be fabricated.
The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office stated that the charges against Daniel Petoia are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
