The arrest and charges against Karanjit Singh and Jagroop Singh were a result of an investigation handled by Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotics Task Force, and the Woodridge Police Department

According to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, throughout January 2026 approximately nineteen kilograms of dried poppy pods, which contain natural opiates, were intercepted by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Airport Group and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The packages containing the dried poppy pods were shipped to the U.S. from the Netherlands with instructions to be delivered to a private residence in Woodridge, New Jersey, via courier service. Both HSI and CBP positively identified that the dried poppy pods contained morphine which is a controlled dangerous substance, leading to a joint investigation being launched alongside the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotics Task Force and the Woodridge Police Department. On January 30th, 2026, a court-authorized search warrant was executed at the private residence the flagged packages were addressed to. Responding detectives located and identified Karanjit Singh and Jagroop Singh as the residents at the Woodridge, New Jersey residence. Various dried poppy pods and drug paraphernalia utilized for alleged distribution was also recovered from the premises.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office stated that the charges against Karanjit Singh and Jangroop Singh are merely accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
