On April 14th, 2026, the arrest of Daniel Cormier, age 31, was announced by Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer. Daniel Cormier was charged with Vehicular Homicide and Strict Liability Vehicular Homicide. The arrest and charges against Daniel Cormier were a result of an investigation handled by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, Toms River Township Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit.
According to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, at approximately 11:05 p.m. on March 7th, 2026, a motor vehicle crash was reported in the area of Lakewood Road and Whitty Road in Toms River, New Jersey. After officers from the Toms River Township Police Department responded to the scene an investigation was initiated in partnership with the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit Vehicular Homicide Squad. The investigation revealed that Daniel Cormier was driving southbound on Lakewood Road in a Volkswagen Jetta when he crashed into a guardrail on the passenger side. The impact caused the defendant to lose control of the vehicle and then get into a head-on collision with the victim, 37-year-old Shamirah Nolan, who was driving northbound on Lakewood Road in a Honda Accord. Shamirah Nolan was transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River, New Jersey, where she was ultimately pronounced dead. Officers that responded to the crash observed that Daniel Cormier was impaired, which led to a court-authorized blood draw of the defendant being taken after his transport to the Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, New Jersey. It was determined that at the time of the blood draw Daniel Cormier had a blood alcohol content of .09%, which is above the legal limit of .08% to drive under, and that he also had both Gabapentin and Hydrocodone. All the aforementioned factors rendered the defendant unfit to operate any motor vehicle. Daniel Cormier surrendered himself to the Toms River Police Headquarters on April 13th, 2026.
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office stated that the charges against Daniel Cormier are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
