On January 30th, 2026, the arrest of Jeffrey Butt, age 45, was announced by Nassau County District Attorney Melinda Katz. Jeffrey Butt was charged with second-degree Assault as a D violent felony, second-degree Vehicular Assault as an E violent felony, three counts of seventh-degree Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, two counts of Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, and Driving While Ability Impaired by the Combined Influence of Drugs, Reckless Driving. The arrest and charges against Jeffrey Butt were a result of an investigation handled by [Officers/Detectives].

According to the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office, at approximately 10:40 a.m. on October 10th, 2025, Jeffrey Butt was driving a 2025 Chevy Trax outside of a U.S. Post Office located on Merrick Road. At the same time a 50-year-old U.S. postal worker was loading his mail truck on the shoulder of the road. Allegedly the defendant drove his vehicle onto the shoulder of Merrick Road and crushed the victim between the Chevy and the mail truck. The impact of the collision caused the mail truck to wheel forwards into two other unoccupied parked cars. Responding officers arrived at the scene to discover Jeffrey Butt still in the driver’s seat of the vehicle with his foot pressed on the gas pedal. Both the defendant and the victim were transported to Nassau University Medical Center to be treated for their injuries. The victim sustained a fractured left femur, fractured left ankle, two spinal fractures, and significant internal bleeding. These severe injuries required the victim to undergo multiple blood transfusions and surgery to implant a metal rod in his left leg and ankle.

The Nassau County District Attorney’s Office stated that the charges against Jeffrey Butt are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
