Story by Ethan

On March 3rd, 2026, the arrest of Steven C. Berger, age 65, was announced by Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella. Steven C. Berger was charged with two counts of second-degree Theft by Deception (N.J.S.A. 2C:20-4a). The arrest and charges against Steven C. Berger were a result of an investigation handled by the North Haledon Police Department

According to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, during November 2024 an investigation into the defendant was initiated after the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit uncovered information about alleged theft of funds. Steven C. Berger was previously a company controller of a Bergen County corporation. It’s alleged that while working at said company the defendant engaged in activities with the purpose of misappropriating $878,675.80 in company funds. It’s alleged that Steven C. Berger had conducted unauthorized increases to his own salaries and assigned himself unauthorized bonuses to himself. Detectives auditing the company’s financial records uncovered the defendant misusing his company-issued credit card for personal expenses and purchases. Part of the funds Steven C. Berger allegedly took from the company to cover outstanding balances on a personal credit card account.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office stated that the charges against Steven C. Berger are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
